There have been few times in American history when our military and Service Members have enjoyed such overwhelming support from the civilian population. There is a widely held perception that Service Members are the best and the brightest of what out nation has to offer. Often, when I speak with recruiters about hiring veterans I hear the most wonderful adjectives used to describe Vets, such as reliable, respectful, professional, trainable, team player, and many more positive attributes. That is how most of the employers out there generally perceive us,... but are we living up to these expectations?
There is power in knowing how you are perceived, in that you can make a conscious effort to be as good as people think you are. It is imperative that we, as Veterans do our best to continue living the values that are expected of us in the military, in order to maintain the hard fought reputation we have earned with the civilian community.
It certainly makes my job easier to assist Veteran's with their job search when employers believe that I am offering up the best quality candidates, but that reputation can be so easily tarnished by the actions of one bad actor. So, I implore you, for your own sake and for the sake of your fellow Vets, put your best foot forward when you are out there representing the Veteran community. Everybody benefits when Veterans continue to maintain their military bearing; Hooah!
